December 5. Friday morning Vitus, Jan and me headed out from Isny at 05:30 to Heerjansdam. Yes, another great opportunity to head home to the Netherlands. Last weekend it was not only “Sinterklaas” but also DDE 2014 (Dutch Drytool Event) .
After 11 our drive with my “new” campervan, a lot of black clouds, loud music and Dutch traffic jams we arrived at “Kinderdijk” . What better place to introduce my German collegas to the Netherlands than a whole bunch of windmills and cold wind.
A hour later we arrived at my parents for “Sinterklaas” since no one at home knew my German friends where coming over we painted them black and dressed them up as “Zwarte Piet” (black peter) including presents from Isny. “Zwarte piet” did what he is best at: entering with a lot of noise when least expected. With their welcome we all started the “Sinterklaas” celebration.
Saterday morning. After again little sleep time to head to “De Berg” (The mountain/ climbing gym Monte Cervino). Enough time to climb all the Nice 20 drytooling routes. Unfortunately I was feeling a cold coming up. So I decided to “take it easy” and climb only the 6 hardest routes to get enough points for the final. And take a rest after these 6 test pieces…
These 6 from M8 up to M9+ routes where all nice puzzles one after the other. Especially since the walls are not super steep the routes where all really technical and tricky. I really enjoyed climbing these routes and left the other 13 for another day. So I had enough time to catch up with every one have some nice chats and enjoy the great friendly atmosphere.
16:00 time for isolation first all women climbed their route. So it was about 17:30 before the man started. I was the last to climb. So loads of time to hang around in the gym chat and warm up. Around 18:30 was it finally my turn to climb.
Climbing careful but steady I reach out in the middle of the route to swing the big Log. And I’m suddenly in midair.. WTF.. Traditionally I broke another hold. So Marianne had to fix the final route and I was going to have another try. This time I made it without braking the hold to the the log.
I climbed all the way up to the top of the chain. With 2 minutes left enough time to make the last 3 moves. From the chain on to a wood disc. Swing in to it and move on to the small Edelrid hold. But this move was way to long for me hanging around trying to figure of four. Shake my arms figure of four again. Try to do it static dynamic, changed my tools again. careful to not pull them out of the wood. still unable to reach: last minute.. Trying again touched the hold again a “dynamic figure of four touched the hold again. And time out :( . The move was too long to make from the handles of the tool. Marianne told me when i was down I should have hold the top of the tool at the pick something in never do/ need to during competition. So it narrowed my mind and I dint came up with this solution. Still it was enough for first place but not to finish te route :( .
