After using my Julbo Bivouak sunglasses for half a year it’s time to review.
Are they that usefull in the field? What about the ‘Zebra glasses’, removable side shields and ventilation?
This is what they looked like new:
After 6 months of biking, driving and mostly climbing they look like this:
Why the Bivouk sunglasses?
Choosing for the bivouk was obvious; first of all it fit’s good to my (narrow) head. The Zebra glasses make the choise even more easy.
It can change from a light transmission rate of 42% to just 7%. Meaning that you can drive the car with the glasses climb a rock route or 6000 meter peak. No more category 2/3 and 4 glasses fore me :).
The side shields give a very good sun protection cover. But first I was sceptic about the magnets that are used to remove the little side shield caps. As a Designer I have fiddled around with magnet adjustment systems and I figured it’s a very difficult to have magnetic systems under control. I was thinking I was going to loose the side caps. But as seen below the side shields are still there and the removable system still works very well.
Personally I think the glasses look very nice also with side shield. They are integrated that well that I don’t feel the need to take them off when wearing the glasses in casual occasions. When in the mountains I leave them on for additional protection I dint have any problem with fogging glasses. But I don’t wear glasses on ice climbs. Most of the time it’s (hopefully) not sunny anyway or the conditions are that bad that I prefer goggles.
Conclusion: Great allround glasses, all I need practically :D
